Dry Tortuga Field Trip (Grades 5-7)

May 17, 2024 @ 6:30 am - 3:00 pm

Lemon Sharks and Hammerhead Sharks will be taking a field trip to the Dry Tortugas. The permission slip can be found here

We are excited to announce that our end of year field trip for our 5th-7th grade students will be visiting the Dry Tortugas!! Our ongoing partnership with Reef Relief joined by the National Park Service has allowed for a discounted field trip adventure for us!

The field trip is scheduled for Friday, May 17th. We need to be at the Yankee Freedom III dock at 100 Grinnell Street (between the Boat House and Half Shell Raw Bar) at 6:30 a.m. to begin check-in. Everyone must be present to check-in. The excursion lasts until approximately 5:30 p.m. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided. Children will have time to snorkel with Reef Relief and tour Fort Jefferson with the National Park Service. On the return trip, students can purchase gift items and/or snacks, so a little extra pocket change would be needed.

Only a limited number of spots are available therefore parents will not be allowed to attend. Reef Relief and GLS staff will act as chaperones.

All children who attend must have passed the Snorkel School/Swim Test which will be held May 1 at the CFK Pool from 10am  (Back up/Rain Day – May 6). See separate permission slip.

Snorkel gear (mask, fins, and snorkel) and buoyancy compensator (BC) will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own snorkel gear. Students should wear bathing suits under their clothes and appropriate footwear (do not wear cheap flimsy flip flops). Students should have a sun shirt and bring a change of dry clothes. Students also need a towel, mineral based sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle that can seal and go into a bag (no Stanley cups with straws). Reef Relief recommends that “you proceed with caution” if you consider bringing the following items: Go Pro, underwater camera, and cell phones. Students would use these at their own risk. Reef Relief has also asked that children not drink caffeinated drinks prior to the trip as they can contribute to sea sickness.

Reef Relief, the National Park Service, and the Yankee Freedom will be sending us waivers that must be completed for all attending. I will get those to you closer to the date.

Cost: $50.00/child We are also asking each person to give an additional $5-$10 for gratuity. We will tip the captain and crew at the customary rate. If you have a financial hardship for this trip, please let Mrs. Amy know and we will anonymously find a sponsor for your child.
